Marietta Kiwanis Read-A-Book Visits Lockheed, April 30![]() Marietta Kiwanis recently visited Lockheed Elementary to support Marietta Reads! Kiwanis read Snuffles by Joan Anson-Weber to 1st graders and presented them with a copy of the book. Lockheed Brownie Service Project, April 27 ![]() The Lockheed Elementary Brownie Troop 349 recently visited a local nursing home, Signature Healthcare of Marietta. Students gave the residents spring pictures that they had painted, played Bingo and Checkers, and sang and performed friendly entertaining dances, such as “If You’re Happy and You Know It.” Lockheed CRCT Picnic, April 26 ![]() Lockheed Elementary 3rd graders were rewarded with a picnic for their hard work preparing for the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT) during Spring Break. These students undertook extra practice in reading, math, social studies, and science! Lockheed Students Sharpen & Synergize, April 25 ![]() To apply two of the principles outlined in Dr. Steven Covey’s work, “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People”, Lockheed Elementary students practiced sharpening the saw and synergizing after CRCT Week with the annual basketball game between Lockheed staff members and 4th and 5th graders. Lockheed Diversity Parade, April 25 ![]() The Lockheed Elementary Diversity Committee recently presented the school’s annual Diversity Parade. This year’s theme, “Our Differences Unite Us” allowed students and staff to represent their ancestor’s culture. A variety of colorful attire represented the different but yet united family that is Lockheed Elementary. Students and staff portrayed the United States of America, Africa, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Brazil, and Pakistan. Lockheed Leagues Nifty Nifty Donate 50 MS Fund Drive, April 20 ![]() The Lockheed Elementary Leagues recently spearheaded a “Nifty Nifty Donate 50” Fund Drive to fund the fight against Multiple Sclerosis (MS) by donating 50 cents. Together, the students raised over $400, and on Saturday, April 20, they presented a check to representatives at the annual MS Walk at the Square. Lockheed Math Extravaganza, April 5 ![]() To practice Common Core State Standards (CCSS) mathematics in a fun and engaging way, Lockheed Elementary students participated in a Math Extravaganza featuring a variety of hands-on math station activities provided by staff and volunteer. Lockheed CRCT Pep Rally, April 4 ![]() Lockheed 3rd-5th grade students geared up for the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT) with a rousing Pep Rally. Performance groups and cheerleaders prepared skits and uplifting cheers to encourage students to do their very best on the CRCT. Special guest, Ken Johnson, former Cincinnati Bengals defensive end, shared his journey to the NFL and an inspiring story of perseverance and hard work to gain success in life. Lockheed League Campus Cleanup, March 30 ![]() Lockheed Elementary League members recently participated in their annual Spring Campus Clean-Up. Members worked in teams, “synergized”, and cleaned up the school butterfly garden, playground, surrounding parking lots, and planted flowers in front of the school. Afterwards, Chick-fil-a East Lake Owner/Operator, Chris Darley spoke to students about Purpose, Vision, and Values. Georgia Ballet Donation Expands Momentum – Sawyer Road & Lockheed, March 12 ![]() On Tuesday, March 12, representatives from The Georgia Power Foundation joined Marietta City Schools (MCS) Superintendent, Dr. Emily Lembeck at Sawyer Road Elementary to present a $10,000 donation to The Georgia Ballet. Momentum, The Georgia Ballet’s long-term residency program for Title I public schools provides children the opportunity to learn the basics of dance training through weekly classes. This year, The Georgia Ballet expands the Momentum program to include students at Sawyer Road and Lockheed Elementary. Marietta Reads! & Flat Mari-Etta @ Lockheed, March 8 ![]() Lockheed Elementary students and staff have discovered that readers make leaders, and that Flat Mari-Etta likes to read with individuals and groups in many different places. In fact, Flat Mari-Etta and Lockheed love to read wherever they can! Maybe that’s why Lockheed Elementary already has 14 Medallion winners or maybe it’s because Rotary and Kiwanis club members visit to read to classes and inspire reading. Whatever the reason, Marietta Reads! at Lockheed Elementary and that makes us Leaders. Lockheed Hosts 12th Annual PFAD Program, Feb. 26 ![]() Lockheed Elementary, and other Marietta City schools, recently participated in the Cobb Chamber's 12th Annual Principal for a Day (PFAD) Program. Lockheed welcomed Mike Miller, American Family Insurance and Dr. Renva Watterson, Interim President of Georgia Highlands College as guest Principals for a Day. Lockheed Health & Fitness Night, Feb. 28 ![]() The Lockheed Elementary Health and Fitness Night provided students with an opportunity to show parents what the Georgia S.H.A.P.E. annual fitness assessment program is all about. Over 30 students attended the event with their parents. Parents and students were encouraged to practice the five tests associated with Georgia S.H.A.P.E. Lockheed Leaders For A Day, Feb. 28 ![]() Lockheed Elementary students recently participated in Leaders for a Day. The students spent the day learning about leadership in the roles of Principal, Assistant Principal, Physical Education Coach, Teacher and Media Specialist for the Day. MHS Y.O.U.T.H. Visit Lockheed, Feb. 14 ![]() Student members of the Marietta High School (MHS) Y.O.U.T.H. program recently visited the Lockheed League Gentlemen and presented tips on dealing with conflict and anger, and discussed opportunities for personal and academic growth at MHS. Lockheed Engineers In Classrooms, Feb. 25 ![]() Lockheed Elementary recently hosted a visit from Lockheed Martin engineers. The engineers spoke to 4th and 5th graders about careers in engineering, and the importance of early preparation and high academic achievement, particularly in the areas of mathematics and science. Lockheed Community Fair, Feb. 9 ![]() Lockheed Elementary recently invited over 20 community resources to provide parents and families with information regarding employment, education, healthcare, family services, and legal counseling. Cobb Works, Chattahoochee Technical College, Latin American Association, NAACP, Good Samaritan Health Center, Peach Care for Kids, and United Way were a few of many organizations present. Lockheed Elementary cheerleaders and singers entertained visitors. Rotary Visits Lockheed - Supports Literacy, Feb. 8 ![]() Members of the Rotary Club of Marietta recently visited Lockheed Elementary in support of Marietta Reads! During their visit, Rotarians read Take the Lead George Washington to second graders. Each class received its own copy of the book for the classroom library. Lockheed Hosts CRCT Parent Night, Jan. 29 ![]() Lockheed Elementary recently hosted CRCT Parent Night to help parents understand about the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT), and the new Common Core Georgia Performance Standards (CCGPS). Lockheed Celebrates Chinese New Year, Jan. 25 ![]() Lockheed Elementary students and staff donned costumes and paraded through the school halls in celebration of the Chinese New Year, 2013, the Year of the Snake. Chinese New Year is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. |

Lockheed Spelling Bee Winners, Jan. 11 ![]() Congratulations to Lockheed Elementary Spelling Bee winners! Jose placed first and Makhy placed second. Jose will now compete in the district Spelling Bee on January 25. Lockheed Healthy Halls Assembly, Jan. 15 ![]() Lockheed Elementary students recently enjoyed a very entertaining and informative “Healthy Halls” program assembly presented by Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Students learned about healthy habits to keep them “Strong 4 Life”. Lockheed Traveling Art Exhibit, Jan. 15 ![]() Lockheed Elementary students are learning about great visual artists such as Claude Monet and Jackson Pollock through the Traveling Art Exhibit. Reproductions of some of the artists’ famous works are displayed in the halls for students to view. Art specialists, Aleigha Reott and Kappy Kelly have planned lessons using interactive White board technology and hands-on exploration. Lockheed Team Competes Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl, Jan. 11 ![]() Lockheed Elementary fourth and fifth grade student teams led by Tanya Bradley and Lynsly Houstoulakis recently competed in the district’s annual Reading Bowl. Students read books from the 2012-2013 Georgia Children’s Book Awards list. The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl is an annual event celebrating reading and supports Marietta Reads! Student of the Month, Dec 20 ![]() Kamil Lawson is a third grader at Lockheed Elementary. She challenges herself every day and actively seeks out new ways to solve problems. Kamil was the first in her class to memorize her multiplication tables to 12, and she almost always scores at the top of her class on assessments. Kamil is a high achiever in both Math and Reading. She is always willing to act as a peer tutor for those around her and sets the example for others by applying the principles outlined in Dr. Steven Covey’s work, “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” in her decision making and approach to learning. Lockheed League Performs National Anthem, Dec. 16 ![]() Lockheed Elementary League members recently sang the National Anthem, led by Lockheed music teacher Ms. Dell Alford, at the Dec. 16, 2012, Kennesaw State University Men’s Basketball Game. Lockheed Winter Wonderland Dance, Dec. 14 ![]() The Lockheed Elementary Leagues recently hosted their annual Winter Wonderland Father/Daughter, Mother/Son Dance. Escorted by their sons and daughters, Lockheed moms and dads were enjoyed light refreshments and an evening of music and fun. Lockheed Gratitude Day, Dec. 12 ![]() Lockheed Elementary recently hosted Gratitude Day. To demonstrate appreciation for the kindness of others, students wrote thank you notes to individuals and groups that have supported them in some way. Rotary Visits Lockheed - Supports Marietta Reads!, Dec. 7 ![]() ![]() Members of the Rotary Club of Marietta recently visited Lockheed Elementary second grade classrooms. Rotarians read Seabiscuit, the Wonder Horse by Meghan McCarthy. The book is part of the Marietta Reads! One Book Marietta Project created to provide the Marietta community a common experience by reading the same book. Lockheed Singing Jets Chorus Entertains, Dec. 6 ![]() The Lockheed Elementary Singing Jets Chorus recently provided holiday entertainment at Lockheed Martin as part of their Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. Lockheed Toys for Tots, Nov. 26 – Dec. 12 ![]() The Lockheed Elementary Leagues led the annual Toys for Tots Drive, and Lockheed faculty and students collected six large boxes of toys for delivery to Publix Supermarket (local drop site). The Lockheed families’ hard work and generosity will help thousands of children in the Atlanta area enjoy Christmas with a smile on their face and a present under the tree. Lockheed Polar Express Night, Nov. 30 ![]() Lockheed Elementary students and their families enjoyed Polar Express Night sponsored by the Lockheed Parent Involvement Committee. Students read books and took Marietta Reads!Accelerated Reader (AR) tests, sipped hot cocoa, and watched the Polar Expressmovie with their families. Lockheed’s The First Thanksgiving, Nov. 17 ![]() Ms. Laffan’s second grade class at Lockheed Elementary recently presentedThe First Thanksgiving play. Students sang songs, recited Thanksgiving poems, and told Thanksgiving jokes. Lockheed Grocery Budgeting Lesson, Nov. 15 ![]() Kourosh Noorbehesht, Vinings Publix manager and assistant managers Ryan and Angelica recently visited Lockheed Elementary students for a hands-on lesson on budgeting for groceries. Students were required to grocery items for purchase based on a $3 budget. They had to add up the cost of their purchases and calculate the change they should get from the cashier. Students created their own receipts detailing the cost of their purchases, and the change they should receive before they could pay for the items. Lockheed Common Core Carnival, Nov. 13 ![]() Lockheed Elementary students, families and staff recently enjoyed a “Common Core Carnival” sponsored by Lockheed’s PTA. Students shared feats of knowledge and understanding with parents by demonstrating framework tasks from theCommon Core State Standards. Lockheed Jets Honor Vets, Nov. 9 ![]() Lockheed Elementary celebrated Veterans Day with a school-wide assembly. Local veterans of the United States Armed Forces were honored for their service to our country with musical selections and expressions of appreciation. Lockheed Hosts Math Blast, Nov. 2 ![]() Lockheed Elementary 4th & 5th graders participated in their first Math Blast session conducted every other Friday at Lockheed. The 50-minute sessions are led by 4th & 5th grade teachers from the Bricks 4 Kidz Enrichment Program. Students engage in a variety of math activities and lessons that allow them to apply their mathematical skills, as well as develop their ability to demonstrate extended reasoning skills. |
Lockheed Fall Festival, Oct. 27![]() It was a beautiful day for the Lockheed Elementary PTA Fall Festival! Students, families and staff had a great time participating in activities such as face painting, hay rides, The Spooky Room, storytelling, Trunk or Treat and games. Lots of delicious food was provided by Chick-fil-A at East Lake and Waffle House. Lockheed students and staff donated deodorant, toothpaste, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, and other toiletries to families via MUST Ministries. Burruss Elementary, Dunleith Elementary, Lockheed Elementaryand West Side Elementary students recently performed with the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) District XII Elementary Honor Chorus. Eight students from schools in Cobb County, Marietta City Schools (MCS) and several Private schools were invited to send their best singers to perform in a choir of 326! MCS teachers Dell Alford, Liz Carroll, Gene Howell and Kristin Runnion also performed. Lockheed Leaguers Visit Atlanta Hawks, Oct. 20 ![]() Lockheed Elementary League Members recently attended the Atlanta Hawks vs. Dallas Mavericks game and received some cool treats, including Atlanta Hawks shirts, meet & greet high-fives from Hawks players as they entered the court, and a chance to rebound basketballs to the players as they warmed up for the game. Lockheed League - MHS Homecoming Parade, Oct. 19 ![]() Lockheed Elementary League Members recently participated in the 2012 Marietta High School (MHS) Homecoming Parade. League Members represented the “Ice Hockey”. Lockheed’s Dream Team on Ice walked in hockey jerseys, sticks and passed out their own version of a hockey puck- Peppermint Patties! Lockheed Celebrates Hispanic Heritage, Oct. 17 ![]() In observance of National Hispanic Heritage Month, Lockheed Elementary kindergarten classes performed “La Raspa”, a folk dance from eastern Mexico. Vinings Publix manager, Kourosh Noorbehesht, visited Ms. Soued’s class and helped as the teacher for a day. He did a great job teaching math and writing. Lockheed Celebrates PASSport Parenting Workshop Grads, Oct. 4 ![]() The Leadership Academy at Lockheed Elementary School recently celebrated the graduation of 17 parents from the school's highly successful Parents Assuring Student Success (PASS)port parenting workshop. Everyone enjoyed great food and fun while supporting the Lockheed PTA. Kindergarten Apple Day, Sept. 28 ![]() Lockheed Elementary kindergarteners recently celebrated Apple Day, and they enjoyed making apple sauce, painting with apples, apple crafts, sorting and graphing apples, and writing about apples. Apple Day was so much fun! Lockheed Hosts Pastries with the Principal, Sept. 14 ![]() Lockheed Elementary principal, Dr. Devonne Harper, welcomed parents of kindergarten and first grade students to the first of three Pastries with the PrincipalSessions. Dr. Harper and parent liaison, Joaquin Colon, shared information about Title I funding, the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards and ways that parents can help their students be successful in school. The presentation was followed by a Q&A session. Pastries with the Principal Sessions are scheduled throughout October for parents of second-fifth grade students. Marietta Mayor Visits Lockheed 3rd Graders, Sept. 13 ![]() Lockheed Elementary third graders recently enjoyed a visit from Marietta Mayor Steve "Thunder" Tumlin. Hos honor spoke to the students about local government, and the students prepared several questions to ask the mayor about his work. Lockheed School Supplies Donation, Sept. 11 ![]() Lockheed Elementary assistant principal, Tezella McQueen and Speech Language Pathologist, Lynn McBride recently accepted a donation of school supplies from the Marietta-Roswell Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. The donations will greatly benefit Lockheed students. Lockheed Pep Rally – Jets Expect Respect! Aug. 17 ![]() On August 17, Lockheed Elementary students celebrated the new school year with a Welcome back Pep Rally. Colorful posters and banners prominently displayed this year’s school theme, Jets Expect Respect. Staff and students entertained the crowd with cheers, skits and songs. Lockheed Jets were encouraged to live up to the theme by showing kindness and respect to others every day. Lockheed Students Receive Free School Supplies, Aug. 15 ![]() Lockheed Elementary students will benefit from a generous donation of school supplies from Partner in Education, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics. The supplies will be distributed to students as desired by school guidance counselors.
Lockheed Native American Studies Unit, Sept. 13 ![]() Lockheed Elementary 4th graders recently studied Native American cultures and their development in North America as part of Georgia Performance Standard SS4H1. To deepen their understanding of the lives of Native Americans from different regions, the students used computers and other sources to conduct research and produce class projects. |
